Botswana Safari by Botswana Odyssey

Botswana; an Expert Guide to the country

Africa's highest price tag has superb rewards! Botswana is Africa's most expensive big game destination but is home to some of the continents finest lodges.

The reason for the price tag is that unlike most other countries Botswana is divided up into a number of private reserves that limit visitor numbers. The result is a level of exclusivity that is hard to beat.

Game is prolific throughout the country; elephant herds in their thousands roam the plains of Chobe National Park, numbers unrivalled throughout the continent. Predators seeemingly rule Botswana's jewel in its crown, the Okavango Delta; an inland Delta that fans out across the desert leaving behind palm fringed islands, a maize of waterways and endless floodplains. Further South, salt pans stretch as far as the eye can see.

Seeing as much of Botswana's safari evolves around the Delta, Botswana should only really be viewed as a fly in destination. Road travel limits the range of game to be viewed.

Highlights

The Okavango Delta

As a wetland paradise located within the arid Kalahari Desert, this unique eco-system is an area of unbelievable natural beauty. Game is fantastic throughout. Peak flood months are June and July.

The Moremi Game Reserve

The heart of the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Game Reserve, an area of land that is mostly dry throughout the year. Moremi is regarded as one of Africa's top area for cats.

Savuti

Another fantastic area for cats and general game. Home of Africa's only pride of lion that habitually hunt elephant, the Savuti area is a must.

Chobe National Park

In August, September and October approximately 60,000 elephant diverge on the Chobe River; it is possible to see herds in their hundreds very close up.

Our Overall View

The high price has its rewards; Botswana can be truly exceptional. However the draw back is that Botswana is the earliest market to book and the best camps are often booked 6 to 9 months in advance. We have often heard of clients being sold second rate Botswana trips as availability has made operators sell rubbish camps. The key therefore is to book early or go elsewhere.
