Kenya; an Expert Guide to the country
"Kenya” and “Safari” have long been spoken in the same sentence and Kenya is widely regarded as the birthplace of this worthwhile phenomenon. Fame however came with a price as the country overflowed with tourists but recent years have seen a shift in focus away from Kenya’s sheer volume of tourists and back to quality.
With this new focus has also come a new and improved brand of lodge and camp experience; Kenya has many of Africa’s finest new lodges. Flying safaris, incorporating two or more destinations in a trip have today become the standard, combining great game viewing with the powdery white beaches of the coast.
The scenery, which ranges from the dramatic semi-desert in the north to the rolling hills and greenery of the highlands to the dramatic sweep of the Rift Valley floor and the Mara in the south is staggeringly beautiful. The game, with the Migration visiting the Masai Mara’s plains in August to November is up there with the best big game destinations.
Kenya's Highlights
The Masai Mara.
The home of the Big Cat Diary for its sheer volume of predators makes the Mara an exceptionally good place for a first time visitor to Africa. With an abundance of game in August, September and October as the Migration moves in from the Serengeti. Peak season is in these months but the park has superb resident game and remains a force to be reckoned with throughout the year.
Amboseli
Lying in the lee of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli meaning “salty dust” in Masai was made famous by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project and has tremendous herds that wander across the dusty pans.
Laikipia
The Laikipia Plateau stretches north from the Abadare Mountain Range to the start of the Samburu tribal lands in the shadow of the Mathews Range. It is scenically stunning
Diani Beach
Cooled by the trade winds that run north and south along the Kenya coastline, Diani hosts Kenya’s finest beaches and top beach accommodations.
Our Overall View
A first timers destination. Yes there are some beautiful areas away from the crowds but ultimately Kenya's primary parks are heavily visited and Africa heads find the presence of too many tourists just too much. Spend some serious money however, stay away from the crowds and Kenya can offer a safari as good as anywhere.
