Mozambique; an Expert Guide to the country
Without wanting to sound too naive, Mozambique in a nutshell is all about beaches and coral reefs. It is an interesting country to travel through if time is on your side but there is very little safari and time in the cities is best kept to a maximum of a couple of days.
Mozambique is one of Africa's last untouched areas of pristine wilderness and thats what makes it so special. The coastline is scattered with uninhabited island hideaways surrounded by spectacular underwater realms that remain largely unexplored.
In the South, just off the coast from the Southern city of Vilanculos lies the Bazaruto Archipelago, a group of islands rising like a mirage out of the sea. These islands combine well with a safari in South Africa and Botswana.
The further North you go, the more difficult it is to travel but ultimately the more rewarding your travel becomes. The Quirimbas Archipelago, just South of the Tanzanian border is a dramatic chain of islands stretching over an area of nearly 400 kilometres.
Diving off the coast is known the world over for having incredible unspoilt reefs; turtles, dolphins and kaleidescopes of reef dwelling fish are only a sample of what these waters offer. Divers flock to the area for the annual migration of whalesharks and whales each year.
Highlights
The Quirimbas Archipelago
In our view this region is home to Africa's finest beaches and the continents finest beach accommodations. Quilalea and Vamizi, two spectacular lodges epitomise what Africa is all about.
Our Overall View
Without doubt the finest beach accommodations in Africa, the most beautiful islands and the finest beaches. People view it as top end luxury but this is solely because of a lack of knowledge; yes there are a couple of exquisite lodges that cost a fortune but there are also a number of unpretentious masterpieces. Quirimbas is where they are to be found and even though it costs about £500 to get there, the area is majestic.
